Rayfin Mk2 Digital Zoom
When a user zooms in on a Rayfin, the Image Signal Processor (ISP) works behind the scenes to compensate for the loss of optical resolution by utilizing computational photography to enhance image quality. It executes a series of specialized, real-time algorithms to turn raw sensor data into a clear, high-resolution zoomed image. Here is what the ISP does when zooming:
Multi-Frame Fusion (Image Stacking): The ISP captures a rapid burst of frames (sometimes up to 30 or more in one second) and merges them to reduce noise and enhance detail, which is particularly effective in low-light, high-zoom situations.
Super-Resolution and Upscaling: Instead of simple digital cropping, the ISP uses algorithms to predict and fill in missing details, allowing it to "upscale" the image to higher clarity, such as taking a 3MP section from a 12.3MP sensor for a clearer 2x zoom.
Intelligent Denoising: Zooming in magnifies digital noise. The ISP uses advanced algorithms to distinguish between real details (like texture) and noise, removing the graininess while preserving, or even enhancing, sharp edges.
Edge Enhancement and Sharpness Adjustment: To counteract the blur typically associated with digital zoom, the ISP applies sharpening algorithms to improve edge definition, making the image appear clearer.
Because of this processing, JPEG images captured while zooming are always 12 Megapixel.
SubC has tested the Rayfin side by side with optical zoom cameras and based on our results, because of the ISP processing, we state that it performs at a 5x Optical zoom equivalent.
